Schubert’s string quartets span his whole creative lifetime. The early quartets are firmly rooted in the classical Viennese style, charming, fresh, lyrical and witty, the later quartets. Although he died at the age of 31, Franz Peter Schubert was a prolific composer, having written some Lieder, nine symphonies (including the famous "Unfinished Symphony"), liturgical music, operas, some incidental music, and a large body of chamber and solo piano music.5/5(1).

The earlier symphonies may not offer quite the high-octane creativity of the later greater works, but Blomstedt has a good ear for the originality Schubert showed in his first few symphonies, and there is nothing at all perfunctory in any of the movements recorded here.
